Aerotel modernizes Jamaica’s airspace
Aeronautical Telecommunications Limited (Aerotel) is committed to maintaining its role as a pivotal support system for aeronautical navigation services within Jamaica’s airspace. As the company moves forward, it is set on enhancing the technological framework that ensures safe and efficient air travel over the medium-term. In the upcoming fiscal year, as detailed in the Jamaica Public Bodies Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure for March 2025, Aerotel is planning significant collaborations with the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA).
These joint efforts are aimed at implementing cutting-edge initiatives to modernize air navigation services, ensuring they meet contemporary aviation demands. Aerotel is also prioritizing the refinement of its safety management system. This initiative is aligned with stringent regulatory standards and aims to limit major safety incidents to no more than one annually.
Another key area of focus for Aerotel is the enhancement of its human resources. The company plans to conduct extensive training that adheres to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) 10057 standards. This initiative will equip its technical staff with the necessary skills and competencies, ensuring they are well-prepared to manage and operate the sophisticated navigation systems.
For the fiscal year 2024/25, Aerotel has earmarked $104.77 million for capital expenditures—an increase from the previous year’s $60.95 million. This investment will support the continuous operation of critical equipment and aims to achieve a system uptime of 99.9 per cent. Additionally, part of this capital allocation includes $12 million designated for the installation of solar systems, which will significantly reduce the company’s reliance on non-renewable energy sources.
Looking further ahead, Aerotel has set a goal to cut its non-renewable electricity consumption by 40 per cent from 2024/25 to 2028/29. This commitment reflects Aerotel’s dedication to environmental stewardship and its strategic objective to integrate sustainable practices into its operations. Since its establishment in August 1978, Aerotel has been integral to the growth and development of civil aviation telecommunications in Jamaica.
The company continues to deliver reliable communication, navigation, and surveillance systems to meet the standards recommended by the ICAO. In addition to its core services, Aerotel also manages KOOL97 FM, a radio station that plays a key role in disseminating information to the traveling public.
Through these strategic initiatives and investments, Aerotel is not only enhancing its operational capabilities but also contributing significantly to the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of Jamaica’s aviation sector.
