Metaverse is the new buzz word in technology. To understand it, let’s talk about how we engage with people on the Internet. We go to different websites such as social media platforms or messaging applications to communicate with other users through text, multimedia, or video calls. Metaverse aims to take this experience to another level by creating online spaces in which people’s interactions can be more multidimensional. This means that users will be able to immerse themselves in digital content rather than simply viewing it. So metaverse basically refers to digital spaces that are made more life-like using virtual or augmented reality. In other words, it is an online world where people can use different devices to move and communicate in a virtual environment.

A few weeks ago, Facebook changed its name to Meta. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said that the company will try to transition from being a social media company to a metaverse company in the next five years or so. The tech giant has even announced plans to create 10,000 jobs in the European Union over the next five years to help build the Metaverse. Microsoft also intends to converge the digital and physical world. The popular children’s game Roblox describes itself as a metaverse company. Other games such as Epic games’ Fortnite, is also considered to be a part of the Metaverse.

Musicians can do virtual concerts within these platforms. For example, in September, millions of people watched the singer Ariana Grande virtually perform in Fortnite. The world’s biggest fashion companies have also experimented with making virtual clothing that people’s avatars can wear in the metaverse environments. The potential of this emerging technology is limitless. Accelerated interest in the Metaverse can be seen as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. As more people have started working and going to school remotely, there has been an increase in demand for ways to make online interactions more life-like. Fans of the Metaverse now see it as the next stage in the development of the Internet.

The metaverse realism combined with the sheer number of choices you’ll get will allow you to feel like you’re not being constrained by your physical body. In real life, you could be someone with a severe disability in a wheelchair, but through the Metaverse, forget walking, you could be able to fly. You will also be able to learn about things by just touching them. The metaverse will allow you to not just travel to any place, but also to any time such as the days of the dinosaurs or ancient Egypt. This can also help to make us to be more productive as we can work in your most optimal environment, whether that is being surrounded by others or sitting alone in a magical jungle. There are also potentially environmental benefits. The virtual teleportation effect of the metaverse means that we will physically travel less, this will significantly reduce carbon emission.

So, the metaverse is a combination of multiple elements of technology, including virtual reality, augmented reality and video where users “live” within a digital universe. Supporters of the metaverse envision its users working, playing and staying connected with friends through everything from concerts and conferences to virtual trips around the world.
